Podcast Time Stamps

[6:00] – What are the keys to Chris’ success?  First it’s been defining success and coming up with an accurate definition of success.  Chris says that for him, success is being able to say no to what you don’t want to do.  It’s not about things, but it’s more about finding out what you really want to do with your time and being able to do that.

[7:40] – Self-reflection and self-awareness helped Chris learn how to untangle and detach from both praise and criticism.  Listening to praise can sometimes lead you down paths you may not want to take in life.  It’s also about realizing what really matters and this isn’t an easy thing to do.

[10:00] – What have been some of Chris’ biggest challenges?  He realizes that he fails every day and he sees the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.  He’s learned to not take off more than he can chew and slow his role a bit.  He’s also learned to find ways to give people what they want and to be able to realize what people don’t want.  And one of Chris’ strengths is that he has learned how to fall in love with what he doesn’t know – to love learning.

[13:00] – Chris talks about the skill of resilience.  He believes it is 100% a skill – how to adapt and be resilient.  He’s observed that to learn how to keep going is an important part of making progress in your journey.  It’s really about effort and not talent.

[15:00] – How Chris finds ways to press on?  It’s really about the goal and keeping your eyes on the end rather than what’s happening at the moment.  It’s also important to have plans while you are in the moment, how to grind and keep going when things aren’t going well.

[16:50] – Chris’ process for setting goals.  At the beginning of every year, he selects “my three word” which serve as a lighthouse to guide him for the year.  And in setting his goals, he tries to orient those goals around his three words.  He also shared about the  9 Box, which is three boxes of three projects for 20 minutes each that orient around his words and his business.  That’s 3 hours he spends on focused projects which move him in line with his 3 words and his goals.

[19:30] – Regarding a longer term goal, Chris doesn’t think that long term.  He really tries to be more present.  His quote is your day is your week is your month is your year.

[21:30] – The challenges that Chris is facing right now have to do with how he wants to interface with humanity.

[23:13] – Chris shares his experience writing his next book and the obstacles he is encountering and how the principle of resilience enabled him to look for another door when it seemed like his path was blocked.

Top learning moments

  1. Much of success is related to your definition of success. What are you chasing?   For Chris, it was a realization that to define what he was really after changed his perspective on what true success is.  His definition of success is about being able to say no to the things you don’t really want to do.  It’s more about the freedom to pursue your dreams than it is about material possessions or money.
  2. Finding ways to detach from both criticism and praise. I think this is really about taking a more realistic perspective of ourselves, learning to understand who we really are and striving to become who we want to be.  It’s difficult to take criticism and if you are going to be able to move forward, you need to realize, as they say, that haters will hate.  Sometimes that’s easier to do than learning how to deal with praise.  But sometimes the praise can bind us to the same fate – doing what we don’t really want to do.  So it’s important to learn how to not take, as they say, you’re press too seriously.
  3. The principle of resilience. How do we respond in the face of obstacles and challenges?  Chris talked about learning the skills of adaptation and resilience.  That when we face challenges, we need to learn how to adapt to them and to be able t  o face them.  In other words, when the door closes in our face, we need to find another door, rather than turning back.
